I only wear sunscreen when I go swimming at public pools, because it makes no difference if I wear it or not in terms of exposure, but the protection will prevent sunburn at least.
When I work in the garden I just try to take regular breaks in the shade. My skin is sometimes reddish but turns brown enough within the first month of the season. By this time in July, I am usually tanned enough to no longer get sunburn.

My mum fully bought into the sunscreen scare in the 90s. We always ended up running around in the sun with sunscreen and I kept using it well into my late 20s until I made an old swiss dude well into his 60s who was super tanned I asked him if he ever used sunscreen. He just laughed at me and asked if I think we had sunscreen 100 years ago and how people survived back then.

Made a lot of sense to me and I haven't used sunscreen since. Especially if you look at the sunblock factor they all have. Factor 50? Please, who even needs this? Even if you get a sunburn after 10 minutes, factor 50 means you need to stay in the sun for 500 fucking minutes. That's over 6 hours of MID-DAY sun for you to get burned. Nowadays I don't ever use sunscreen, I just move into the shade after an hour or so. My son isn't using sunscreen either and we were in Portugal last August, he was 2y old at the time and guess what? He never had a sunburn in his life so far. We played at the beach for up to 4 hours a day. All he needed was a shirt and a hat. After 2 weeks we dropped the shirt because he got used to the sun.

The biggest issue with sunscreen, at least in the US, is that all of the ratings and testing is based entirely on how much it protects you from UVB rays.
UVB rays cause short term, immediate skin damage like sun burns. UVA rays are what cause the vast majority of long term damage like wrinkles, discoloration, and skin cancer.
You can buy a 100 SPF rated sunscreen in the US, and unless it is specifically made to be broad spectrum and provide UVA and UVB protection, it might prevent you from getting burned, but probably does almost nothing to reduce long term skin damage or cancer. And after all of the fearmongering over Oxybenzone, all of the sunscreens that provided the best broad spectrum protection were taken off the market.

I don't wear sunscreen either and I'm outside all the time. It's called a fishing shirt and fishing hat. What really made me take the sun seriously is living in a tourist town where boomers are on the lake all the time. Their skin becomes brown and extremely wrinkly. I noticed the areas of my arms that got lots of sun were starting to wrinkle.

Fishing shirt and fishing hat fixes the problem. They also make gaiters for your lower face if you're super autistic about it. I actually don't like the way tan looks anymore. It hides some blemishes but looks tacky imo.
