They could organize to defeat the menace, but instead they monitor the situation and let it kill everything and everyone do to, what must ultimately be, narrow political concerns. The society of the survivors begs for an israel style solution of drones, giant walls, automated gun emplacements, landmines, and indescriminent firebombing of cities.
There are then the comments on the nature of science being an impersonal false messiah.
