The truth is somewhere in the middle, but leaning more towards the British side; it really was a case of colonists seizing an opportunity that presented itself in the wake of a war-weary and deeply indebted Britain, somewhat no different than the Carthaginians telling Phoenicia to go fuck themselves when the opportunity presented itself. To help pay off its war debts, the British did tax the fuck out of legal parchment, raised its tariffs on colonial goods while lowering the colony's tariffs on Britain, and did commit more central oversight into colonial operations compared to the relatively lax policy they agreed to prior to the war; they pretty much did this with all of their colonies and territories, but supposedly did agree to some concessions when the North American colonial authorities protested (the American side is they "conceded", but did what they wanted to anyways). In all reality, our "civil war" in the States had more legal legitimacy than the Revolution, but winners write the books and the history, and so on.
