Russians have cities and towns that are not named after russian or slavic languages. Second biggest city in Russia is literally called SANKT PetersBURG, there is a town called PeterHOF, OranienBURG, russian citadels were called Schlisselburg, ports were called Kronstad. This is as if France suddenly decided to name its capital Pariserburg or some other shit. In Russia there are two parallel worlds - you either are born into elite or you are born into descendants of feudal serfs. I just wonder how does it manifest itself? Can Ruskie insiders tell us and share how social relations look like in Russia? Is it something like in England where Normans established feudal system and until today they rule the country and have the most wealth?

Happened before, the -wich of some English cities and the -weig, -wick, -wig, -wieck of German cities come from Latin vicus, same shit.

Most places in Western and Central Europe are named after Celtic tribes or settlements. Like Paris, Vienna, Milan, etc. The Rhine and Danube are also Celtic origin words.

It's not the same shit, because latin was just continued by Europeans by various means, whereas Russians out of nowhere gave names from a completely foreign family of languages to settlements and didn't even bother to russify those names.

Why do you care? There are a huge number of names in America that were derived the same way. There is even a town called Bismarck named after the Chancellor of Germany, does that suggest to you that this town was ruled by the real Bismarck or some of his elite? Lol

Names of american towns derive from settler groups. If Germans who were speaking at the time german founded a town called Bismarck, then I am not surprised. I am surprised that conscious of their identity Slavs in 18 century decided to use a completely foreign language family.
