Poland lost about 179,000 kmsq of territory, 45% of its prewar territory, to the Soviet Union, and gained around 100,000 kmsq from Germany post WW2.

Lost eastern regions, known as the Kresy, included:
Lwów (now Lviv, Ukraine)
Wilno (now Vilnius, Lithuania)
Grodno, Stanisławów, and other culturally significant cities
Were absorbed into the Ukrainian SSR, Byelorussian SSR, and Lithuanian SSR, and stayed there post collapse of USSR.

About 1.5 million Poles were expelled from these lost territories to the west, while around 3.5 million Germans were expelled.
