Why do people have their ego so heavily invested in the idea that they are free thinkers and not NPCs? Even just thinking about the possibility that you are in fact an NPC yourself sends people into an uncontrollable rage.

No one wants to be called a retard even if they engage in obviously retarded activities like kanging as egyptians or jews like niggers.

I think the only people who are truly free thinkers are the ones wondering whether they have free thought at all.

If you are ever dead set on something being right, it's probably wrong.

But it's stupid. Because if you are in fact an NPC without having realized it, then the first step to rising out of that is to realize it. Maybe it's even a programmed response to be angry at the idea because this keeps people hopelessly locked into it. They're never going to try to rise out of NPCdom because they will never admit to being NPCs. Seems like a perfect plan. I have some ideas and desires that I think are causing me suffering, and yet I can't get rid of them, I'm often wondering if these ideas and desires are implanted. But most people identify very strongly with everything they believe in, desire etc, they can't question it because for some reason it implies to them an attack on their very essence, and the notion of questioning it sends them into fight or flight mode. What if people are NPCs, ie programmed, and they are also programmed to fight to protect the walls of their prison? What if most of us are?

I really don't understand it. Sam Harris does this thing to illustrate how our thoughts just pop into our heads where he asks the audience to think of a movie. Why are people so offended by the idea that you didn't actually decide for yourself which movie would pop into your head?
