Now these people were like your cookie-cutter rural folk of the region, but somehow even worse. Dimwitted, uneducated, horribly inbred, collectivist, fanatically loyal to caste groups and tribes. Pretty much the last people you'd want in a first world country. The only reason why the British took them in was to manage a labour shortage in their industries in the 60s and 70s.
They're pretty bad, but they weren't exactly as religiously fundamentalist and rabid until the 80s-90s. Prior to this, they were just regular Barelvis (Very influenced by Sufism and following a syncretization of Hindu practices such as visiting shrines, veneration of saints and holy men, festivals, witchcraft etc.). There was some presence of religious orthodoxy and puritanism before thanks to Saudi-funded monsuqes and madrassahs, but it was during this time period when it increasingly started to gain roots in the community thanks to even more Saudi shilling, and likely because it helped them to unite and remain a stable social group with structure and shared strong values, functioned as some form of defense mechanism against hositility against them, it prevent their religious identity from getting secularized and wiped out and it helped them to relate to and get along with other Muslims also going through this trend.
