Several hadiths about Mohammed say he was in pain when he would supposedly get his revelations. If the merchant/warlord figure had temporal lobe epilepsy it could easily be painful. Assuming the things asserted about him are true, he seems to have been narcissistic too as well but epilepsy seems to have mixed with it. Maybe even a degeneration feature of the seizures. There is evidence that that he was asserted to be evil or possessed mirroring what people thought of such illnesses too. This seems to point towards the above as well. The story is meant to be a mirage, a fantasy basically. He was illiterate but told to write a book that isn't a book, he was an orphan who had no friends or family and near the end of his life but then an angel visited him and told him he was the chosen one by God. Then his fortunes suddenly changed over night and everything he ever wanted became his. Then he died in suspicious circumstances and all his followers started fighting each other, called fitna which continues to this day.

It's actually a very interesting religion when you view it like that. Closest comparison in the west would be Scrooge but a reverse version, play A Christmas Carroll backwards and you have his life story.
