There was a brief period (~60’s - 80’s) where culture flowed up from the lower classes rather than being dispensed downward by the ruling class. Most of our “American identity” comes from this period. It stuck with people due to authenticity and working class appeal.

“Rah rah you better love America” didn’t fly during those times because they were going through a period of government corruption, pointless wars and general disillusionment. It works nowadays when things are even worse because culture is dictated by the ruling class again.

There are positive ones, but they tend to be asshole songs. Teens are still living in the schoolyard with the fist fights and the cliques. Adult musicians want the money but they tend to create double meanings in rock music so they can pretend that they aren't in it for the money.

The one reason I like 1990s anime is because they were smart enough to not try to bullshit the audience.
