Its a book by an Englishman who wrote it as a parody of poor parenting. When he saw how the film had portrayed the children as inherently bad, he tried to have it pulled and was deeply troubled by his creation,but pinewood studios resisted with litigation. The film was an early attempt - coarse compared to more recent propoganda - by the jew to vilify goyim children.

Every one of those kid's bad behavior was because their parent(s) enabled them. If that was the lesson then it was pretty clear in the movie.
Was the author angry that none of the kids suffered serious permanent damage, like in the original versions of Grimms' fairy tales? The moral being "you must discipline your children or they will get themselves killed by dumb assery".

Not really. The books were not originally intended as children's entertainment, he wrote them to express his distain satirically against certain individuals that had grated him in the past. The book of Willy Wonka which you clearly haven't read accounts how hubris is actuated on each of the parents, by proxy to their offspring. In that sense it is a commentary of the greater potential shortfalls he saw in society, should traditional etiquette and manners fail us.

He was if I recall bothered by the extent the film focused on the individual journeys of each of the children. In the end nobody was supposed to win. We all loose, and not because Mr Wonka is a crazy spiteful megalomaniac, but because the game requires us all to uphold the standards of conduct. The film failed to convey that, in his opinion.
