A three or multi-party system is impossible with our first-past-the-post national elections. Someone needs to be capable of winning 270 electoral college votes or the Senate will decide. If the America Party really becomes a thing, it will eventually replace either the Democrats or the Republicans. It's not the number of parties that gives you pluralism, but rather the ease of creating new parties or killing existing parties. In a hypothetical system with three perma-parties you would still get a uniparty because it's the permanence of the parties that causes this, not the number of them.

If new parties can flicker in and out of existence as needed then it's harder for a uniparty to form regardless of how many parties there are in the current moment. If all the parties are 100+ years old then you will have a uniparty regardless of how many parties there are. The uniparty is basically a democratic society's version of aging.
