Well if we had not bought a small home 15 years ago and our cars are paid for we would be on the street. The last ten years have been brutal with the cost of living. Housing, the rest. But was stupid. Remember coming out of College in the early seventies. Really life was easy and I did not know it. The world then even with the Vietnam war was just a lot easier. Yes, the manufacturing sector has been complete shit for many decades. I started 25 years ago and people were telling me then that it was a dying trade. I figured to get in an learn from the old guys before they retired and my skills would be valued. We'll see in 2030 when the last of the baby boomer cohort has retired. For now, no, the wages in this industry have been unbelievably stagnant for the lasyt twenty years. I was making 115k on the mid 2000s and the pay is the same today, hasn't even gone up 10k. I realize that it is better than the median pay but keep in mind that I work 50 hours minimum and in years past 70 hours per week was normal. Adjusted for the effort it would have been better to have two low-stress jobs and the pay would have increased.

I never thought about leaving the trade until this last year. Yes, it is grim when inflation is 10% for each of the last two years and the government statisticians gaslight with bullshit stats and the employers give no raises or claim that even a 4% raise will break them, then they go ahead and purchase multiple new million dollar machines. I just had to stop caring about the next year or two because the economy is precarious, and that has has helped to an extent, but if this continues where even 1st-day burger flippers make as much as skilled operators with years of experience then this trade will officially be dead. We are seeing it now, good guys leave to drive trucks and the mouth-droolers that stay are laughing that they can flip burgers for the same pay with lower stress, they don't care to improve their skills while they scrap parts. It has been like this for almost six months or a year, maybe I refuse to accept it is real, but it really do be like that.
