Going to the moon is kind of a big deal, we can still do it today but also "We don't have the technology" at the same time in a sense. You aren't wrong. The farthest image I've seen taken from a shoreline used infrared or something. And you are catching me off the cuff, but I assume all wavelengths would be affected at some point, even if others can see better than others. And of course images become blurrier. The atmosphere being a mitigating factor. One image at high humidity with zoom looks blurrier than an image with low humidity and zoom.
