with a bacherlors / masters degree but also less than 2 years of actual experience

https://www.thestar.com.my/tech/tech-news/2025/07/01/how-do-you-teach-computer-science-in-the-ai-era

"A computer science degree used to be a golden ticket to the promised land of jobs," a college senior tells the New York Times. But "That's no longer the case."

The article notes that in the last three years there's been a 65% drop from companies seeking workers with two years of experience or less with tech companies "relying more on AI for some aspects of coding, eliminating some entry-level work."

So what do college professors teach when AI "is coming fastest and most forcefully to computer science"?

>Some educators now believe the discipline could broaden to become more like a liberal arts degree, with a greater emphasis on critical thinking and communication skills.

The National Science Foundation is funding a program, Level Up AI, to bring together university and community college educators and researchers to move toward a shared vision of the essentials of AI education. The 18-month project, run by the Computing Research Association, a research and education nonprofit, in partnership with New Mexico State University, is organising conferences and roundtables and producing white papers to share resources and best practices.

The future of computer science education, Maher said, is likely to focus less on coding and more on computational thinking and AI literacy. Computational thinking involves breaking down problems into smaller tasks, developing step-by-step solutions and using data to reach evidence-based conclusions.

Stanford CS professor Lieben Reagan argues that "The growth in software engineering jobs may decline, but the total number of people involved in programming will increase."

HEY RETARD
Who the fuck actually gives a shit about your past experience? Most of the time the new gig will want you to forget it all cause they do it differently anyway.

Make shit up.
I put down that I have a CS degree even though I quit halfway. If they ask (which they hardly ever do) I just say that I started my own dev studio and was learning more that way.

Don't go straight for jobs with huge companies, get a job with a small software shop and go from there.

Fake it til you make it is what most devs in the industry actually agree with. Go spend a day or two reading shills posting on r programmerhumor and learn to talk the talk ("oh yeah I hate react lol. Props suck amirite? It was better when it was just PHP ahhh those were the days. I just use redux now")

If you really wanna go for gold, make a fake shitty website, make a fake shitty company with 1 google review by anonymous, get a burner phone and put that as the number for the company you worked for, when they call to check references, answer and put on a voice and shill yourself.

Same with engineering
You will only ever find senior Eng job ads because they want a wrangler for the jeetery or other 3rd world juniors being paid way less than a local graduate. Your job will always be overseeing their shitty work and signing off on it so there's someone to blame when the boeing falls out of the sky or the bridge collapses in the winter.

That said it's easy to get a job in CS still just you need a specific skill like you do optimizations of linear alg libraries for machine learning or you can build a compiler or properly write a language spec. Any skill besides being a generic dev who only did minor projects in school.
My advice is if you are at any school get into some research team on campus, most professors have openings and need juniors then you have a skill like you translated papers to algorithms for massive amounts of data and did analysis on it or built dashboards and visuals for the PhDs on the team. That is gold in the financial world and some startup doing quant shit will hire you.
For engineering you can work overseas then come back as 'senior' so you become the h1b to Denmark or UK

We're hiring but I have genuinely asked our talent scouts to stop accepting applicants with CS degrees. I've interviewed about 30 of the most entitled retards in the past few months, about a dozen made second round mostly because our HR women said they "fit the culture" but none of them have even been passable in our technical interview (the most basic SQL, linux, and general programming assessment).

A CS degree stopped being worth something when people learned you can make money in computers. We need to start gatekeeping being a nerd again, it shouldn't be socially acceptable. If you're not a barely functioning autistic, a femboy, or both I can guarantee you do not have what it takes to work in my field

Agreed.
A few months ago HR lined up this interview for us. Ditzy asian girl fresh-grad. She knew absolutely nothing about programming. I'm used to interviewing candidates that i think aren't quite up to par for us... but she was something different entirely. Her "presentation" was just going over the 100 or so lines of (terrible) python she wrote for a school course. That was mind-bogglingly bad. When asked why she chose threads instead of multiprocessing, she said that the only difference between them was one could "use more cores" than the other. Complete waste of time.

Meanwhile HR bitches and moans when my boss tells them to stop being little cunts and re-schedule this guy's interview after he couldn't make the first one because his mom got in a car accident. We hired this guy, because he actually knew his shit, and he's been pumping out actually good C code since then.

We need the people who suddenly get a spark in their eye and autistically ramble for 82 minutes about MIPS cache micro-optimization and overdraw minimization by pre-sorting geometry using an acceleration structure if you ask them about their "super mario 64 optimization project" that they've been working on in their spare time.

on the flipside, i just quit a wfh job doing almost nothing making $50K and only submitting 1/4 of the project work as completed. I was given 3 months to hand it in at the end of the contract but the manager wanted a draft submitted with 2 weeks before the deadline. I am more than capable of doing the work so planned to fuck around for 2months and did nothing.
sadly for this company I was going to do the entire thing in the last 2 weeks but the manager was such an asshole about tgetting he update it I gave it to him mostly uncompleted and promptly resigned. I got paid $5k a week to do nothing for 10weeks.
kek, fucking assholes. should have just let me hand it in when originally agreed. Zi hope that smug loser gets sacked by his director
