Seriously how much will genetic engineering in humans and designer babies will change the political landscape? What if you could choose how healthy, intelligent, strong and beautiful your kids could be? While also choosing their gender and physical characteristics?

Take one look at designer dogs and their health problems, then apply that to babies.

"Designer babies" are Star Trek fantasy bullshit.
We don't have the scientific understanding and capacity to pick and choose for cosmetic traits and will likely never have the ability to accurately do so. What we can do is gender selection (in countries that allow this) and we desperately should do it, in order to cull 70% of all male fetuses imo. I'm pretty confident that we will not see a day when parents routinely use reproductive technologies to select for cosmetic traits, or even against multifactorial diseases (you need to do testing at private companies, which is expensive, and not all countries even allow this kind of tests). The complexity of the genome is too big, and the gene-gene, gene-environment, epigenetic interactions are too numerous and minute to control.

That seems unlikely to me, despite that it may be much further in the future than some may think. AFAIK a lot of genes that code for specific phenotypic traits have already been identified .

The first things humans started doing with CRISPR was getting rid of heritable disease, now they're capable of getting rid of the extra chromosome in downies, autism is next. Thank goodness. We went from horse and buggies to walking on the moon in less than 200 years. We already mapped the entire human genome. The fantasy of GATTACA will become a reality in less than 500 years and "God children" will be illegal. Permits will be necessary to "reproduce" and humanity will be all the better for it.

it's eugenics, but, its not 'your' baby anymore.

its now the man, the woman, the scientist, and the genetic data from some 4th contributor.

They're not gonna succeed. The "babies" will be deficient in some way or another. Human creations can never live up to God's creations.

Extremely doubtful. People who want that wouldn't use this technology with eugenic purposes in the first place (if you edit for intelligence, health and beauty you're automatically an eugenicist) maybe the ones who for LGBT stuff would only focus on beauty, but never all of them together

What we definitely can do is have a couple fertilise a whole bunch of embryos, DNA sequence them and pick the best one of the bunch. That is possible right now, no gene editing required.

It's more my baby than any natural child, since I don't have to play lottery with some random chick's genes. I can give birth to the improved copy of myself.

Completely different process than what would be done with designer babies. Designer dogs are fucked up because humans breed them for unhealthy traits that are considered cute or breed ideals. That's more similar to feet binding or those tribes that stretch out women's necks to be really long by putting rings on them.

probably, it's like all those energy start ups that never made a product, we'll be hearing about super babies for the next 40 years without any results.

>What we definitely can do is have a couple fertilise a whole bunch of embryos, DNA sequence them and pick the best one of the bunch
Sure, but first of all that's only for the top rich 1-3% of the world who can afford this. Second, ethical (remnants of the Christian moral code) laws simply deny you from doing it. From my quick research, your "Embryonenschutzgesetz" prohibits preimplantation genetic diagnosis for "non-medical reasons", and embryo selection based on genetic characteristics is simply illegal, as it is in France, Switzerland and Austria. Of all western countries I only know of the US where such a procedure is legal in many states.
Third, we are decades, no, probably centuries away of this becoming socially acceptable on a wide scale. Imagine "the talk" you'd have to do with your wife. "Well, honey, I just want our kid to be a sexually attractive, pale white girl with blond hair and blue eyes and a well built ramus with good forward growth". This is insane. How would you even talk about it?
