I think the problem is that books are rarely updated for a modern audience. Movies get a remake every 10 years but a book will stay the same for centuries. I personally find old ways of speech to be really unpleasant to read so when I see something like any of these gay holy books I say no thanks. I'm not taking advice from some conman from 1000+ years ago or whatever scheming jews took over the religion in the mean time. If they would rewrite all of these old ass books in the common tongue of the 2020's then they would be a lot more viable as an entertainment product. Give me an AI generated movie about Jesus doing Jesus things but set it in modern day with normal speech and make things plain with none of the bullshit fake magic. I agree that if you enjoy it you will pay better attention, but I think the real disconnect is that we read/listen to different types of books. A polemic or philosophical tract or other work that tries to build an argument is going to be harder to recall and evaluate correctly compared to a historical work or a novel. Especially if you are listening rather than looking at it.

MY mom is a librarian and I've read thousands of books. I've read books that would break your brain. Try to read the Breakdown of the Bicameral mind by Julian Jaynes.
It's possible to read an old book like that and figure out some of the ideas contained in them, but it's just so much easier to ask the LLM to summarize that shit in plain 2020's English. That shit is dense and obtuse and verbose, and old, while also covering a mind boggling topic that in itself is hard to wrap your brain around.
