I certainly think we were unfairly cruel to them and could have worked out an arrangement similar to the French. We killed off over 99% of the pre-Columbian population and now have to take care of the remaining natives until the end of time, which doesn't seem like the best option available to us.

No, empathy is something that has been grossly misused and misconstrued within the past 20 years. Just because you put yourself in someone’s place does not mean you have to feel bad for them. Since at the end of the day it is YOU with all your morality and beliefs going into their position not becoming them. And if they do something you find morally apprehensive or wrong then you don’t need to feel bad for them.
