How can I be sure if I'm autistic? I'm not socially 100% inept, I can interact fairly well when I put myself in the thick of it and people seem nice to me when I'm not full blown socially retarded (glory to God it's not always so), but I nevertheless wonder if there's some kind of disconnect for me. I don't even really know what autism is at the end of the day. There is a number of things about me that are equated with autism. I've taken tests online out of curiousity but they all rely on experience with things I don't really have, the tests are very contextual.

You are idealizing the high functioning one thinking having autism in itself is a positive due to that. Ask any parent with a low functioning autistic child and they will beg for a solution to it. The spectrum of what qualifies as autism broadened immensely the decades. I’m familiar. I’ve seen video on YouTube of such a case and I agree. But again, the data as of 2023 suggest that low functioning autists compose 30-40% of spectrum (correlating to an IQ <70) and high functioning autists compose 60-70% of the spectrum (correlating with above-avergae intelligence). I recall Temple Grandin saying she believed eliminating Asperger’s as a diagnosis from the DSM5 was a categorical error; i believe her reasoning for this was as I mentioned iirc

I was diagnosed with the tism in childhood. I had the hallmark traits. Late language development, sterotyped interests, exhibited classic stimming behavior, displayed inappropriate behaviors, and underwent an extensive differential diagnosis process which also included IQ testing which incidentally also but me on the fast track for academic achievement removing me from the special ed classes I had previously been in and puttting me in the gifted program instead where I thrived until i got bored in high-school and dropped out. I was basically the poster child for high functioning autism. I was also part of clinical trials in which various psychiatric medications were tested including being among the first children ever put on prozac to study if it was even safe for children and my childhood psychologist overseeing those trials is also now very highly respected innthe field and the head of department for a world class institution which i will not name.

So as a diagnosed autismo king I feel completly confident in saying the cure is to go outside and touch grass nerds. Make yourself uncomfortable and do things that are really hard for you. Literally all you have to do is talk to people and socialize. It's a skill like any other and even an autist can learn to do it well if you practice enough and are committed to improvement. Cognitive empathy is impacted, not primitive empathy so examine those emotions very very carefully and eventually the relevent patterns will emerge. Practice, introspect, and build associations and you'll eventually come out the end with a functional theory of mind that with even more practice will become almost second nature. You'll still be weird but you'll be weird in a way that doesn't significantly impede your ablity to connect, navigate the world of normies and their nonsensical bullshit, and form realtionships be they romantic or otherwise.
