My state is notorious for shitty roads due to frequent precipitation, cold, and truckers. The state government wanted to up the sales tax to help fix said roads up. Had I left the context there anyone would be ok with that, but your average resident knew that they had done the same damn thing not but three years ago for the same reason. No results, no change, it's the same shitty roads for more money.
So most people just caught on and just voted against "better roads".
The moral of the story is to not fuck around with public-government trust. Good people want to do the right thing, but bad people FEED on people doing the right thing and will incentivize the good people into extinction.
