It's like the "balance of power" idea in Europe where there shouldn't be any country that is too domineering or powerful. It makes sense to me that there should be more than one country calling the shots.

Athens and the Greek city states was a Hegemony, before Athens became the Hegemon the multi-polar city states fought each other.
Pax Romana, led by an Empire
and America is the current Hegemon, and while we do see it breaking down now and there's always been small proxy wars, compared to the multi-polar early 20th century, it's relatively more peaceful.
Multi-polar = many countries vying for competition/influence/territory/resources, and as a result, total wars.

The current in-between state of affairs is just too unefficient and unsustainable.
The US may act as the "world police" for the moment but it's getting harder and more expensive by the day. This parade won't last forever.

A multipolar world is better if there is not one power in the world that easily dominates all others in which case no minor power would dare to start a conflict. If this is not the case, if for example - as we currently witness - the once dominating power got too weak and other powers got stronger, then a balance of powers, the multipolar order, must be achieved to prevent conflicts. This requires that all powers agree on this new order and allow it to unfold, that not one of them (China) tries to become the new dominating power and the former dominating power (America) does not try to cling to it's status by starting a large scale conflict.
