You looking at it isn't the issue, since you can only see the chosen outcome of the wave collapsing into a point on the screen after the wave spreads, meaning the first one is how it will look with just visual observation. It's also really easy to replicate.
The "observation effect" involves measuring the light particle with other particles, and collapsing the wave function into a singular point, leading to the second pic.
Your eyes do not actively interact with the things they see, they just receive photons that hit us.
If you want to try it at home you only have to block one of the entrance slits with your hand and the light from the other hole will instead act mostly like direct shadows as you're used to, instead of creating an interference wave function.
A true test for interaction requires strong as fuck magnets as tiny scales that the layman has no means of replicating easily.
