There are two female main characters and they are both daughters of and apprentices to ultra-competent men. There really isn't a big "gorl powah" moment that I can recall and I don't think it's fair to call it feminist. It's one of the best sci fi films ever made, especially so because it manages to explore ideas like faith and spirit and the limitations of scientific materialism in gaining true understanding of the universe but still remained pretty firmly rooted in hard sci-fi. An older film called Contact that also had M. Mconauhey in it also did this well:
