When it comes to cars especially I guess one big reason is that people can't afford anything anymore. Most new cars are company cars/leasing what ever. And even if they somehow have to money to purchase one they go for more conservative colors because they already have to think about resale value.
Cheaper models actually do come in nice colors, love the new Opel models/colors, they are cheap, crappy 3 zylinder cars, but people can actually affor them and buy them in nice colors they actually like. Wraps are becoming the big thing now. Besides just changing the color, using wraps allow for complex designs and finishes not easily achieved with tradition automotive paint. Modern cars are abhorrently expensive because of their elaborate safety features alone. Older cars were death traps. Cars weren't even required to have seat belts until the late 1960s. Oh but they sure were sturdy, I'll give you that. The car would come out of a crash more or less intact. The people inside, not so much. I think the resale value thing is a myth. Dealerships get cars from the manufacturer, and if the dealer is going to have a car sitting on their lot taking up space, they're not going to want it in a polarizing color. Blacks, whites, and grays might not be everyone's first choice, but more people will tolerate those over a bright yellow or purple car that will sit on the lot longer before getting sold. It's the same thing as when you go to a gun store and the case is full of nothing but polymer strikershit and anything more interesting built for real shooters is going to be a custom order item. Retailers only buy products they can reliably move.
