The "best" German divisions probably refer to the SS and Wehrmacht units like the Großdeutschland division.
Judging from that, they probably performed well.
Around 150 Portuguese volunteers served among them as well.
They were mostly deployed around Leningrad after the Battle of Moscow so they didn't really fight on offense too much. But considering their performance, they were definitely a better choice to hold the flanks at Stalingrad rather than the Romanians, who basically had no heavy fighting experience by that point.
