The only reason the Germans were encircled at Stalingrad was because the Romanian divisions meant to hold the flanks of the city crumbled when they were attacked by the Soviets.

In order to fund and buy more time for the breakaway civilization. Seriously, read Joseph P. Farrell or at least Jason Jorjani. Nazis were working on numerous "wunderwaffen" in the latter days of the war and chief among them was Die Glocke (The Bell). Some high ranking nazis like Himler even were convinced that these wonder weapons would help them win the war at the last minute.

Of course that didn't happen, but by continuing to fight, the nazi soldiers bought the elite leadership time to prepare for the post-war peace. They were able to make plans for many of them to escape to Argentina and they were able to decide how much information and technology to reveal to American and Soviet victors and how much to keep hidden amongst the breakaway group that continued to exist after WWII. They lost the war, but there's a strong argument that they won the peace afterwards

Because what was done to them afterwards was going to happen whether they surrendered or not. Better to go down fighting at least trying to win than being raped, tortured, and falsely accused of genocide. USSR was too large and too industrialized for Axis to win. They didn't have the resources, manpower or industry to outlast USSR. They banked on USSR collapsing, once it didn't happen it was over.

The only way for the war to be won by 1944 is if D-Day fails (it nearly did in reality) and the Italian front stalls for the Allies even after they reinforce it after a failed D-Day landing. Kesselring (the commander of German forces in Italy) is famous for holding up the Allies in Italy for two years in reality.

The Allies could have reached a settlement with the Germans so all of Europe doesn't fall under Soviet influence. But if they don't do that, I don't think the Germans could have won. The war would be dragged out until 1946 or 1947 if the D-Day landings failed, though.

The "best" German divisions probably refer to the SS and Wehrmacht units like the Großdeutschland division.

Judging from that, they probably performed well.

Around 150 Portuguese volunteers served among them as well.

They were mostly deployed around Leningrad after the Battle of Moscow so they didn't really fight on offense too much. But considering their performance, they were definitely a better choice to hold the flanks at Stalingrad rather than the Romanians, who basically had no heavy fighting experience by that point.

They fought because the German leadership never surrendered. That’s it. That’s all there is to it. The French army surrendered because army leaders ordered them to surrender. Britain didn’t surrender because the British governement ordered them to keep fighting. Russia didn’t surrender because the Russian leadership ordered them to keep fighting
