More people here live in apartments than in USA and apartments are of course smaller than houses.
When it comes to houses, you have those tract homes there, there really isnt any small houses like that here.
But on the other hand there is not a lot of McMansions either, which you have plenty of.

Building cheap housing is nice, because there's a lot of poor people who want a house or apartment and it's much better for them to own cheap housing than rent some shithole(at the end of the day they keep the equity). There is lot of work you need to do in a house from mowing the lawn to cleaning the gutters to plowing snow, upkeeping everything, at some point you need to do stuff like repaint the house, replace the roof, etc.
And of course the bigger your house is the more floorspace you have to vacuum and polish, more countertops and surfaces to clean etc.

I don't mind any of that. But some people do. So wanting to live in apartment is not "cope" they simply dont want do any of that work.
And many actually live a large portion of their lives outside their apartment doing things and consider the apartment more as place to sleep and eat while the actual life happens outside the home
Having a large house with ton of upkeep they consider as losing valuable time that could be used better for something else
