This treatment of Japan by America shocked some Japanese people.

Japan is no longer important to America.

>In what world do ANY of these tariffs make any sense.

1. The US consumer buys 25% of all the world's exported goods, around 4 trillion dollars per year. Every country needs our market for their exports. Access to it is thus massive leverage for any negotiations we might be having with any country.
2. This year we've already collected $130 billion or so in tariff revenue with no corresponding increase in inflation, because exporting companies are eating the cost. Over the next decade, tariffs will raise trillions in revenue which doesn't have to be taxed out of you or I.
3. The simplest demand we've been making is to relax some of the ridiculously heavy tariffs other countries have had in place against our exports, most for decades. Our exports competing more fairly with other countries' domestic production = more revenue for us, more manufacturing jobs here.

That's bullshit and you know it. Prices for imported goods have gone up especially for electronics. Those aren't going to be manufactured here.

Real talk
If tariffs will keep netflix, capeshit producers, retarded American translators who love to localize every milimeter of foreign culture that cannot be expressed in terms of burgers and fries, and all the rest of the 300 million golem squad away from anime then maybe that's not going to be such a bad thing

It's not bullshit. Everywhere you look, exporter margins have been slashed.

No, it hasn't.

>Those aren't going to be manufactured here.
A lot will, just for national security reasons. Turns out exporting most of our ability to make advanced microchips to 1) our next big enemy and 2) a tiny island off the coast of that same next big enemy was stupid.
But really, it will cause SOME reshoring of some manufacturing here, add demand for some existing manufacturing here, but mostly just transfer a bunch of wealth from exporters to us. Last I checked, we were already at ~$130 billion in tariff revenue for the year with barely any in place, and zero increase in CPI.

>third worlder has stupid opinions
How surprising.
Then it sure is nice of us to demand other countries stop taxing their own citizens with their tariffs on American goods, and it's strange that so many governments are screaming outrage about that demand.

> Q: Why did Trump start by sending letters to South Korea and Japan? Are they annoying him?
> LEAVITT: It's the president's prerogative and those are the countries he chose

Japan and South Korea recently skipped the NATO leaders' meeting due to the bloodshed in the Middle East. This is a clear message from these two countries that they don't like war, and they wouldn't like to join in military actions.

And maybe the 25percent tariff to these two countries are Trump's response to it.

Note that the price of Japanese cars, for example, destined for the United States have dropped 15% while staying constant for everywhere else? That's exporters eating the cost of the tariffs.
There are huge margins in import/export.

All of those places need the US market
Japan and WK and China aren't going to buy more of each others' stuff, because their manufacturers compete with each other
>Japan: Hey Korea, could you buy a million cars from us? We don't want to sell them to those jerk Americans
>Korea: Uh no, we make our own and we were kind of hoping you could buy a million cars from us. Could you buy 200,000 microwaves from us?
>Japan: No, we were kind of hoping you'd buy ours. Hey, China, do you want a million TVs?
>China: Our whole thing is putting both of you out of business.
