In Short

An Indian-origin woman defended herself for using a leash for her toddler
She said the leash allows the child freedom to explore without constant worry
She shared a video along with an explanation in a now-viral video on Instagram

A video shared by an Indian-origin woman sparked debate online after it featured her 3.5-year-old son tied to a leash during a family holiday in New York City.

Shubhangi Jagota, a Canada-based Indian, posted the clip on Instagram, where her toddler could be seen running and jumping around Times Square while safely tethered to his father with a child leash.

Jagota explained that the leash was not about control but about safety and freedom. She said her son loved exploring, and the leash helped them keep him safe in the busy streets of New York without restricting his curiosity.

“He’s 3.5 and we’re not ashamed to say we put him on a leash. In a city like New York, this was hands-down the best decision for our trip. Our little runner always wants his freedom, and this gave him just that—without giving us a heart attack every 5 minutes,” she said in her post.

She added, “The best part? He thought we were on the leash. He called himself the sheriff and us his captives. Honestly, everyone was winning.”

Jagota said they used two types of leashes during their trip, a longer one for open spaces and a shorter one in crowded areas.

The post divided the internet. Several users called it poor parenting. “You should be ashamed. Teach your kid to follow rules, not put him on a leash. If he wants to run, run after him,” a user wrote.

Others defended her decision. “Handling toddlers in crowded places is not easy. This keeps them safe. It’s the smartest thing to do,” one user said.

Another parent shared their view: “I’ve used a leash when travelling alone with a hyper child at an airport. It’s about safety, not shame.”

A few users added that parenting in today’s world is about being practical. “These little munchkins run faster than you think. Safety comes first,” a user said.

As debates continued, Shubhangi Jagota’s message stayed clear; for her, it was never about shame but about giving her child the freedom to explore safely in a bustling city.

is this really an issue? ive seen these more often than not here in the states. some kids are straight up runners man. in crowded areas and near traffic, if you know youre kid will randomly starting booking it, this is a perfectly reasonable solution especially if you HAVE to go into a busy place with the kid. better this, than winding up on a shitskin hate thread later to be mocked by anons for being a bad parent by letting your kid run straight under a monster truck tire.

is that really cruel?
I don't think it's cruel. You should be allowed to do that. You could just restrict the kid by holding their hand or carrying them too

You've never been around Indian Turdlings do you?

They are infamous for misbehaving and not listening to instructions. When disciplined they let out this obnoxious shrill.

Trust me when I say the parents are doing everybody around them a favor.

I did that when mine were very little. Stops pedos trying it on or niggers attacking them because they aren't brown animals. Pretty necessary in modernity given what's happening.

I think it could be bad for the development of the kid if they have always in public the feeling that they can't do anything that really threatens their safety because their parents are literally always there, no matter how hyperactive they are and no matter what crazy ideas the kid get in their head. It also takes away incentive for the parents to teach their kids of how to not endanger themselves in public because they can mostly rely on the leech that nothing can go wrong.

Parents put me on a leash, I had a lot of energy as a youngling and parents are not as active as they used to be.
Really easy to lose your kid if he isn't holding your hand. Sense of adventure is really strong in children; they'll be hiding in concrete sewage pipes when you're not looking.
