I've been in favor of mandatory military service for everyone from 18-22. I didn't really get started on a career until 22, mainly because I had no idea what I wanted to do. I think it would give people some guidance and structure before they fully enter society as adults. Once completed, you would either get a full-ride to any university or the equivalent amount of money plus job placement.

You have a constant large military force, it would instill at least some sense of nationalism in everyone, give structure and purpose to a group that needs it before throwing them out in the world, and set up citizens for success after; then what they do with that advantage is up to them. How is this any different than mandating kids attend school in some capacity? If being forced into combat is your sticking point, then there could be some incentive offered for those directly involved in combat; possibly those roles could be voluntary, the same as now. The point would be to set as many people on the path for a successful life while also maintaining a solid and persistent military force. Why is any of that so undesirable?

I worked through both college and my master's degree with no debt. I didn't need "structure" because my parents raised me to not trust anyone who wanted to give me a loan and to support myself or I'd die destitute on the streets.

I'm speaking ideally, not with the current state. There could be an argument that by doing this, it could eventually unfuck the U.S., but that's a huge leap of faith. Basically, this would be my ideal scenario; then work backwards to determine how to institute it and eliminate the barriers (such as low faith and morale in the country). I would argue that having every single person involved in employment and service at that age would instill an interest in the well-being of the nation in a much larger percentage of the population, which in turn should have a positive impact to improve faith in the country. But you are correct, there is an initial barrier if the current state is undesirable. That's the hurdle in the beginning. Any constructive ideas?
