The problem with American cars for decades now is that the manufacturers have been hamstrung by emissions regulations. So they can only make overpriced over-engineered efficient garbage. Trump’s BBB eliminated those regulations so in theory, American cars should get better and cheaper if they can make decent ones again, which they’re now legally and financially able to.

Unfortunately, we’ll probably only dominate in trucks, work vehicles, big people carriers like the Suburban, off-roaders, and muscle cars. For commuter economy vehicles, it’s impossible to beat the Asians.

Also I'm not down on the older model Hilux, but I am aware that they have become a bit of a meme for alot of people thanks to television programs like top gear and people who geberally do not know any better. But Hilux becoming a meme is for a reason, not because of "people that don't know better".
Our army uses these as a non-armored general purpose vehicle because they are extremely reliable. If I needed a truck I'd definitely buy one, driving these during my service and also seeing how they can take a beating at hands of conscripts convinced me of its superiority.
Note though that this is 10+ years ago and I don't know if they fucked up the car since then, but at least models around 2010 were simply excellent.

But now you’ll see gut wrenching potholes and unfinished stretches on pretty much every highway. It is extremely frustrating to go to a “poor” country, like in Eastern Europe, and realize how much better kept the roads are.
