When it comes to critters, I say live and let live. If they aren't stinging you or harassing you, I'd leave them be. Of you're really worried, you could just knock the nest off with a long stick and then once the wasps fly away from the area, you can toss the nest away. Hopefully they'll rebuild elsewhere. That's what we do when they try to build on our porch. We never kill them, we just knock the nest down with a broom stick and they move along.

Do you have a fig tree nearby? We had issue with them nesting under our roof but it was because we had a fig tree we enjoyed. Figs aren't sweet at all but I guess we want to keep it around. Had a issue with them nesting in areas beyond their own original places. Pretty soon we couldn't go anywhere without seeing a wasp. Then the wasps started taking up space in areas that were safe and became less safe with them around.
Before long, younger wasps started attacking people, including delivery guys and people just doing their job on property, for no reason other than being wasps. This is just how they are. Sure they seemed fine when they kept to their own, but they spread and multiply, and make safe areas less safe.
I say that the best solution is to deal with them when they are inn smaller number. Wasps were fine when they stayed in their homeland, but here, they're just a menace waiting to happen.

Last advice:
IFFF the nest becomes too big one day, or you just become too scared one day to let them stay, absolutely do not kill them.

Just put a large bag around the light, tie rope around bag and unscrew the entire light from the wall. Take the bag with the light to somewhere remote and cut a big hole in the bag or remove the rope and quickly run away. Return a few days or a week later and all of the wasps should have migrated out of the bag to a new spot and you can retrieve your light.

Those are white faced hornets, the only species I know of in Ohio that will occasionally attack unprovoked, unless you consider "being in their territory" a provocation.
There is a guy that let various insects around the world sting him, and he ranked the white faced hornet in the top 10, and having been stung by them multiple times now, I concur their sting is multitudes worse than any other wasp in the midwest by far.

Kill them before they're a problem, while the nest is small. I had a nest pop up under my breaker box last year, and didn't find out until I had to replace a light switch. I closed the lid (which is a bit stuck so it bangs shut, pissing them off), and a little cloud of niggers appeared from underneath it. It's hard to run in flip flops and one managed to get me near the tiddy, killed it though. Came back that evening with a can of bug spray and a lighter, just be careful and don't burn your house down if you're gonna do that. I got bees this year and had this caveman urge to throw things at them. I resisted the urge to destroy them and moved them to a bee hive and now I have bees.

The wasps in the OP are tiny and harmless and actually help the flowers by pollinating and getting rid of pests

the best type of wasp to have around are mud daubers

>solitary wasps so don't need to worry about a bunch of them moving in

>even if they do their bites and stings are weak
>even if you destroy their nest they might not attack you, that's how passive they are (they also relocate easily so not super attached/ protective of their nests)
