Japan and China owning so many bonds is just assurance and some leverage in trade

Look up the Plaza Accords. You would be twice as wealthy today if we weren't financially exploiting Japan with the yen-carry trade. Japan tried to dump treasuries last year and within a few hours they stopped after they got a nasty phone call from their masters. Yukio Mishima was right about everything.
