In a crash box basically when you're going up the gears at a certain point you can just pull it out of gear and it will get almost sucked into the next gear when you're upsetting. You do it in like a 1-2 motion, say from 3rd into neutral and then into 4th. Coming down the gears its a little different, especially after you get your CDL. You just let the engine come down in rpms and pick your speed for the next gear. You can go from 7th to 3rd if you know what you're doing or conversely put it in 5th at 25mph, it all depends. Usually when you're taught to float they teach you to use the accelerator to both get it out and back in gear for downshifting, but I just use the clutch to pull it out because if you're losing speed up a hill the accelerator ain't gonna pull it out if its already on the floor. To the right you got a W, to the top you've got a N (with a 3 or E under it), bottom you got an S.
So basically a Compass Mark.

You've got a bunch of secondary marks around the cracked zone. The three circles and blob probably indicate wettest zone. Could be a cracked buried pipe with the big blob being primary leak zone. Long straight line probably indicates best spot to jackhammer for digout and pipe repair. Assuming it's a wet pipe rather than a electrical or gas pipe.

Not in the business, so I'm no pro on concrete repair trade markings to indicate warnings or work hints. UPSIDE, there's a trend where they use 3D sphere cameras to watch dugout zones when work happens and with GPS coordinates, they can look at the whole scene like an XRAY vision display of the last work done. Should make doing rural digs a huge chunk easier knowing where all the pipes and lines are in 3D space before breaking ground again. Not as useful for rarely serviced locations, but great for frequently dug up spots.
