They're basically on-par with mentally retarded humans intellectually speaking, and even superior to some retardates, yet they have far less rights than them. We put them in cages and subject them to conditions which would be considered torture if it were done to a human. Our lineage has only been distinct from theirs for 6 million years, which is only 60 times greater than the time non-Africans have been distinct from Sub-Saharan Africans. It's almost certain that hybrids between humans and great apes are possible, in fact, hybrids between species which are far more dissimilar exist.

Considering how similar great apes are to humans, and how intelligent they are, I believe they should qualify for personhood, and be granted the same amount of rights that humans have. Obviously, they wouldn't be able to advocate for themselves, but much like mentally retarded humans, we would have guardians that advocate on their behalf.

People aren't ready for that discussion. I think you are correct that intelligence is what makes you "Human", as weird as that sounds.
There are some people that are so dumb, that I wouldn't class them as humans. Unable to form a critical thought, or able to decipher what's real and what's fake but if some ape was able to do so. We should in theory, give them the same rights as the average human has today

Where does it stop? Corvids also have a high level of intelligence and probably even a rudimentary language. But yes I agree in theory. Monke torturers deserve the rope

Insofar as we should respect their sovereignty and leave their lands alone, sure. They can't work or buy groceries, so they can't be treated like an adult, but we should certainly respect the intelligence they have and leave them alone. The same should be done for elephants and the sea critters like whales, orcas, dolphins, and the like. If they can recognize themselves in a mirror and clearly communicate with one another, and even to us, sure, they deserve to be left alone. A dog can dream, God knows those other animals can, too. I mean, a fucking elephant knows how to paint from memory and its own imagination. They deserve to be left alone in peace.

Neither can retards or babies. We need to fully integrate great apes into our legal code and give them human rights, so that a situation like the murder of Harambe can never happen again. The zookeepers should have never favoured the life of some niglet who fell into Harambe's enclosure over Harambe.

Or instead of giving rights to chimps and apes, you could take away rights from retards.

I think we should annihilate them all.

Fuck the apes.
