Very useful creature. However, culturally there was this thing in Israel where kings were not allowed to ride horses (much taller and menacing beast) just to keep them humble before the people. That's why the Lord Jesus Christ first came riding on a donkey as the suffering servant, but returns as the King of Kings after the tribulation on a white horse for the battle of Armageddon.

Because their god is a donkey. Yah-weh is the sound a donkey makes, like hee-haw. Jesus riding into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey was a metaphor for his subjugation of the jews.
