The first chief justice, John Jay, resigned because he thought the work was so boring and wanted to go back to private practice. I don't think anyone would care about the SCOTUS if they decided minor matters in contract law. Instead most of their decisions are whether kids should get their genitals mutilated, who gets to be on the ballot for President, and if you have to take some untested science juice to work.
