It is *extremely* common for students and workers to overstay past their visa expiration and forge fake documents making it seem like they're still good to go. If your girl is truly on the up-and-up, then she's fine and will be released after a few hours. If it turned out she was lying about her visa expiration, she's going back.
That's kind of the point of detention and questioning. Unfortunately, immigration enforcement are not omnipotent all-knowing beings that know exactly who every illegal is and where they are at, so detention and digging for infomation is something they need to do. They can't rely on a "Dude, just trust me bro" to be the honest truth.
