We don't have a lot of bauxite here for aluminum production, so we get it from Africa. Companies that need it to manufacture will simply shut down, manufacture something else, or never start up in the first place, if you put big tariffs on it.
We put tariffs on goods from China, and Microsoft instead chose to simply stop making new generations of Xboxs altogether. That manufacturing is never coming back here. They just laid off 10,000 people last week, many of whom were in the Xbox division. If companies can't manufacture and turn a profit, they'll simply shut down that entire division.
Explain in great detail how making US companies pay more to manufacture makes more people here want to manufacture? This isn't the 1800s -- the economy is now exponentially more diverse and there are a billion things to invest in that don't involve manufacturing.
