3. the empires own population at it's height reproduces slowly. while the barbarians they export food to multiply wildly
4. inevitably the barbarians overwhelm the empire or it just collapses on itself.

this doesn't happen to every empire, not every empire ends up exporting food and some are just destroyed by long term weather trends, those would be different patterns.
