I've been arrested twice for marijuana possession before my state legalized it and did 1 day plus probation both times.

I doubt that a judge would ever send a normal kid, from a normal background with decent life prospects down in jail for a joint, it'll just be managed in other ways, maybe he'll have to clean garbage

This is sort of how probation works where if you're doing the community service and showing up for piss tests you'll stay out of jail.

Criminals won't go through the motions and violate the probation and serve the suspended sentence.

I grew up in Ohio and in the 90’s it was already decriminalized. You could have 3oz and as long as it was in a single bag it was drug abuse, which was just a ticket. States like Michigan a single joint was a felony, in Florida it was a felony for a weed pipe.
