I'm not sure about the numbers but the INA or Indian national army fought alongside Germany but at the same time there were Indians who fought for the British Empire as India was still part of the British empire during WW2.

I read that America offered India freedom from the British if they fought for the allies so that pissed off the British yet they were powerless to stop it. In the end since Germany lost India gained its independence despite protests from Churchill.
