didn't know that but that's another positive. I find Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to be very re-watchable, it's really a time capsule to another era. He learned to tone down the revisionism and cartoon violence too, which makes it work much better than Django and Inglorious Basterds. In this one it really does feel like maybe things could have been different if a couple of guys like Rick and Cliff had lived next door. That's very much my thought as well. It's one of my favorite comfort food movies. Tarantino's mentioned multiple times how it's his love letter to the way things were/could have been. Of all his movies it has the most just overall love and good will without all of the angsty edginess and irony. Well, for starters the entire premise is about how a Puerto Rican kid dindu nuffin even though he very obviously did. The key however is how the director manipulates the audience into agreeing with the premise.
1: Cast Henry Fonda as the dissenting juror. Fonda always played the good guy, so the audience is on his side right at the start.
2: Fonda's character proceeds to discredit the prosecution's case in a flimsy and manipulative manner. Every single piece of evidence and every testimony is set to meet an impossible standard. As long as there is a theoretical possibility that the prosecution is wrong then the evidence is discarded. Even though there is tons of deceive evidence were told it doesn't matter as long as some remote possibility exists that it's flawed. It demands an impossible standard that no one could be convicted of anything with.
3: The other jurors are bullied and shamed into voting not guilty along with the audience. There's a racist guy who gets shamed by the others, some lazy guy who just wants to get it over with and a guy who projects his poor relationship with his son unto the defendant. The message is clear that the only reason you'd ever want to convict a minority is due to some personal flaw. Their biases, how ever informed by reality they may be, must be counteracted. The only bias that is allowed is the liberal post-war consensus where the minority is always a victim and the white man is always a villain.
