The real problem with American "love" is the treatment of relationships like they exist only between two people who feel strongly for each other in the moment and they don't need to think about the consequences it may have in the society the two people live in. America has emphasized the right of individuals to have free love and be parents even when the people themselves aren't competent and mature enough to handle the responsibility their society has unwisely allowed them to take on. Fundamentally, the problem stems from loss of the will to gatekeep ALL serious responsibilities from individuals who couldn't take responsibility seriously even if their lives depended on it. Telling the irresponsibles "no" would break their hearts in the moment, but the greater good is more important than letting fools run rampant so as to not hurt their feelings.

De facto arrangements were a pretty good set up and worked well for centuries. Couples only paired with approval from parents. The young man in the relationship would literally ask the young ladies permission to marry.

But courtship existed because a bride wasn’t a guarantee. That’s how the old Western system differed from de jure arranged marriage like the South Asian model.

With full arrangement, such as in India where 90% of all marriages are arranged, there’s no need for courtship. Why bother flirting when you’re already guaranteed a wife? In those countries, young men don’t even bother learning how to interact with women in their adolescence.

The results are pretty disastrous. Early marriages are nightmares, with neither partner understanding the nature of the opposite sex. And it’s existed for 2,000 years, so India has lost its entire culture of how to interact with girls. It’s why their attempts at dating in the West are so cringe. It’s why “bobs and vagene” is a thing.

Great post. Another form of courtship I've heard about is one having to earn the approval of the woman's family outside of just her parents. Parental approval seems like a specifically Anglo-Protestant practice while family approval seems like more of a Mediterranean practice which, I believe, is a step in the right direction.
