It's because if people hate you, being antagonistic towards them won't make them like you better. It is kind of a mass psychosis. People are mad at him when in reality he's doing most of the damage to himself. He dragged his own reputation and credentials through the mud, and that's kind of a silly reason to be mad at someone. He didn't even really hurt the Stop Killing Games movement and he didn't do anything other people didn't do moments later. He's hardly the only person with an overblown ego.

There is, however a rational behavioral way to look at the hate. If you want to think about it rationally, he's basically a credentials parasite and people naturally hate that shit. Social parasites get ostracised, and there's no other social parasites that can benefit from defending him. If anything, the move for a social parasites will attack him.
