I suppose that religions that value both piety and self-improvement are going to be fairly successful. Combine that with Mormonism being the only version of Christianity that has a uniquely midwestern American culture and that it shares much of it's ritualism with Freemasonry and that it's powerful enough in it's local area to be all encompassing in many aspects of daily life makes for a unique religious zeal while also being laid back and modern enough to cope with changing social influences.
