America didn't "give up". It lost in Afghanistan. The same thing happened to the western roman empire. It fractured after being unable to expand then the western empire got wrecked by Germans as the east held on.

It's not going to be the same with America due to geography but it will be close. America will be unable to project power and it will just fracture.
