I am a German immigrant to the USA. My Grandfather and his 3 brothers served in the Luftwaffe. Not because they wanted, but because their father forced them to enlist.

My Great-grandfather was a very smart man, known throughout the little town as "workers movement guy" and unionist. Once things got tight, and polarized, he was known as a red one.

2 out of 4 sons survived because they enlisted as airforce mechanic and bulldozer driver. One died because he was a Messerschmidt pilot, one was MIA in France as rear guard police officer.

Moral of the story - if shit hits the fan, you want to enlist as something away from the front, not wait until you get conscripted into the SS.
