After a certain point, long before 50% unemployment, universal basic income becomes a necessity. You cannot expect a large fraction of your population to just roll over and starve to death because billionaires decided to leave them out in the cold to make more profits in an ever-escalating tragedy of the commons.

As AI replaces jobs, either you need to make it so that people no longer need to work to have access to food, shelter, and healthcare... or you are lighting a fuse on a time bomb until it hits a critical mass of people who have nothing left to lose and everything that they want to gain starts with 'so we kill and eat the rich'.

The only third option involves the rich seeing this coming and firing the first shot to depopulate the poor before they can enact bloody revolution, which still turns into option 2 if the rich lose.
