>>510181273this burger actually hit the nail on the head for the most part.
was working there for a bit before covid and holy fuck, everyone is on something it felt like. even the ones that aren't are all low key alcoholics.
was working in one of the main farming towns in nsw and the level of poverty like something out of the shittier american rust belt towns. only people with money were the farmers and business owners set up around extracting wealth from the migrant laborers all looking to get another years visa.
felt like the entire town was a "company store" the hostel made everyone buy their own pots and pans plates etc as an entry requirement for instance, rent was higher than what you could reasonably expect to make doing farm work.
when asked what was worth seeing, the bartender said "well they just build a new bunnings..." (hardware store)
so you got a bunch of broke migrant farm workers taking all the farm jobs at slave rates because the farmers leverage the fact that they need signoff on their visa
a bunch of pissed off locals who used to do these jobs for more money but got undercut.
one of the bleakest few months of my life.
