That's where picking cotton came from.
Cotton only grows during a certain time of the year, harvest comes only during a couple months.
Rest of the year was literally spent "picking cotton" removing the seeds.
Later on they produced cotton that didn't have seeds.
Funny how history works, you look up "picking cotton" and 99% of the online references have it wrong.
"Picking cotton" comes from picking the black seeds out of the cotton as they used to do that by hand.
History is fun when we forget and then repeat errors.
