we do use metric where it matters. i worked in the additive manufacturing industry and nobody used the calipers in imperial mode. we also use metric for weighing food, cooking ingredients, and liquids.

It's virtually impossible because imperial is so widespread and people are going to try to convert. If you say 1 meter most Americans are going to wonder how many feet or inches that is.
